Very Happy Valley
This novel about a pioneer in Oregon is very well written. I was intrigued by the struggles encountered and the relationships formed. I don't know how else i could possible describe this novel without giving the magic of its discovery completely away. It was well written and quite a page turner. I highly reccomend it to those who enjoy stories of struggle and motivation.

Hawaii Cooking With Aloha
Published in Paperback by Wide World Pub Tetra (June, 1993)
Authors: Elvira Monroe, Irish Margah, and Don Blanding
Average review score:

Classic Hawaiian Cooking
I love this book. There are no photographs and the recipies aren't "trendy", but it's a standard for Hawaiian cooking and one of my most-used Hawaiian cookbooks. There are line drawings of waves and leaves that are taken from a 1939 book that give this book a rather old-fashioned feel. The recipies are sorted by island and catagory and are simple and easy. I use this book every summer for the great sauce and dessert recipies. There are all the basics here like coconut fried shrimp, plus lots of originals like Tropical Cookies! There are some real island recipies that mainlanders might have trouble with due to the difficulty of locating native ingredients. But most of the recipies are perfect for mainlanders having a luau; easy, fun and delicious!

Authors: Carolyn Monroe and Carolyn Greene
Average review score:

One terrific, fun read!
Carolyn Monroe stories always provide much-needed relief from the day-to-day stresses and strains of life. Help Wanted Daddy is no exception. I laughed, I cried (I turned pages so fast I caught a chill from the draft!), I didn't want to put it down. Carolyn has a gift, and her stories are treasures!

The Highwaymen: Florida's African-American Landscape Painters
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (January, 2003)
Author: Gary Monroe
Average review score:

Great coffee table book for those who long for the beach.
An all-inclusive journey through the lives and souls of African American painters from days gone by. These creative souls painted breathtaking beach landscapes... Many of their works still survive today, and sell for [a small fortune]. (I know, I have one in my living room.) A great buy! Just be warned; one look through it's pages will draw you toward Florida's shores lke a child to the smell of cotton candy!

Homeri Opera/Iliadis Libros Xiii-Xxiv Continens
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (June, 1993)
Authors: David B. Monro, Homer, T. W. Allen, and D. B. Monroe
Average review score:

The Second Half of the Iliad in Greek
The companion to Monro's first volume, Iliad I-XII, this is classical scholarship at its best and most essential. Monro produced in the 19th century an edition of Homer's great epic in Greek that is still used by scholars around the world who read and work with the poem's original Greek text. This book is not for beginning readers of ancient Greek, since it follows the usual format of Oxford Classical Texts and lacks any commentary. But for those who can read the Greek, this volume offers some of the best moments of the epic: the death of the hero Achilles' great friend, Patroklos and his funeral games; the savage return to battle by Achilles and his victory over Hector; the final ransom of Hector's body by his aged father Priam from his mortal enemy. No one who can should miss the chance to read the Iliad in its original beauty.

Homeri Opera: Iliadis Libros I-XII Continens
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr (June, 1982)
Authors: David B. Monro, Allen Thomas W. Allen, Homer, T. W. Allen, and D. B. Monroe
Average review score:

Homer's masterpiece
This edition, in the original Greek, contains half of the Iliad and is followed by several other volumes, which contain the second half of the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Homeric Hymns.

The Iliad centers around the anger of the warrior Achilles when Agammenon unjustly takes his concubine. Achilles subsequently refuses to fight, and, because his divine strength makes him indispensible to the Greek war effort, the Greeks are nearly driven from the Trojan shores.

Reading this book in the original language makes a big difference. Homer is a master of both sound and sense and to read him in translation deprives the reader of the former.

The lack of commentary and vocabulary in this edition does not make it the best choice for beginners in Greek.

I Have a New Family Now: Understanding Blended Families (Comforting Little Hearts Series)

Great for young children
This book is so good because it not only explains things but is also interactive. The children fill in blanks and draw. It is easy to talk over things with your child as you go through the book together. I recommend it highly.

The Iliad of Homer (Oxford Myths and Legends)
Published in Paperback by Oxford Univ Pr Childrens Books (October, 1991)
Authors: Barbara Leonie Picard and Joan Kiddell-Monroe
Average review score:

Good story
This is a very readable (as in smooth-flowing and fun to read) story (as in adventure, with lots of drama and excitement).

A warning: as stated above, this is a young adult version - still good for grown-ups, but not a translation of the original. I notice that 2 of the comments below are not based on this book, but on other versions of the Iliad.

In His Steps
Published in Hardcover by Brownlow Pub Co (December, 1982)
Author: Charles Monroe Sheldon

The Real McCoy!...
Before the cultural rage of "What Would Jesus Do" AKA: WWJD, with all its hoopla and rings and trinkets and bookmarks and CD's and spinoffs, there was this book by Charles Sheldon, and when I first came across it back in the early 70's (and I was a new Christian), I was compelled to want to follow Christ more closely, as I continue to do.

The story follows (if you don't already know), the tale of a preacher, who is fairly successful in his suburban congregation, and a stranger crosses his path, and he has to make a decision to help him. Unfortunately, the stranger comes to his church the next day (Sunday) and speaks shortly and then dies. This, of course, sets the whole story in motion, and we find our preacher/pastor asking some heart questions about his own motivations versus the ones of the congregation, many who give "generously" to the church, and who could be put off by taking a commitment to do everything - "the way Jesus would do," and the idea of "What would Jesus do" took off and transformed the lives of all the major characters.

It is an inspiring story, and it harkens back to the early 19th century, and Mr. Sheldon, of course, was a minister, and he spoke eloquently about this whole story. You might think that he was the main character.

A marvelous tale, and one that can be applied today. Read it, and let your heart soar!...
